Dorothy Arata Academic Award

The recipient for the 2017 UMAR Dorothy Arata Academic Award is Dr. Meredith K. Ginley.

Dr. Ginley graduated from the University of Memphis in August 2016 with a Ph.D. in clinical psychology. During her years in graduate school, Dr. Ginley published 11 peer-reviewed articles in academic journals, two invited book chapters, and 39 conference presentations. She earned a M.S. in clinical psychology from the University of Memphis in 2012 and B.S. in clinical psychology from Tufts University in 2008. Currently, she is working on a post-doctoral grant at University of Connecticut Medical School, Calhoun Cardiology Center.

This award is given in memory of Dr. Dorothy Arata, Dean of the Graduate School at the University of Memphis from 1982 to 1993. Dr. Arata earned her Ph.D. from University of Wisconsin in 1956.  Her research was in biomedical issues related to liver health and mineral deficiencies in the body. Before coming to the University of Memphis, she was a professor of biochemistry at the Michigan State University.

With support from the Alumni Association, UMAR hopes to pursue programming that will provide educational opportunities for its members, support for the University and opportunities to be heard on  major community issues. UMAR is a constituent organization of the University of Memphis Alumni Association, and members are entitled to the same benefits and privileges as all Alumni Association members.
